Trump Firm Plans to Erect Australia's Tallest Tower

(MENAFN) A company owned by US President Donald Trump has unveiled plans to erect Australia's tallest skyscraper on Queensland's Gold Coast, in a high-profile venture that has already divided local opinion.

The Trump Organization, partnering with Australian developer Altus Property Group, is proposing a 91-story luxury tower that would feature a six-star hotel, 270 residential apartments, retail space, a beach club, and a swimming pool. Both companies confirmed the plans in separate statements Monday.

The announcement has sparked immediate and polarizing reactions among residents. "Anything Trump, I think, is terrible," one local told media. A second resident offered a more pragmatic view: "He's a strange individual, but he's got plenty of dough. He knows where to put it."

The divide has spilled onto the internet, with two competing petitions surfacing on Change.org. One opposes the development, arguing the Trump brand sends "the wrong message about who we are as a community." A rival petition counters that the tower represents an economic imperative that will transform the precinct into a "thriving hub of activity and opportunity."

The proposed site carries a troubled history. Vacant for over a decade, it previously hosted a resort constructed in 1971 that was demolished in 2013 due to "concrete cancer." Several tower projects received approval in the intervening years but were never realized. The lot currently holds only the remnants of an abandoned 2016 construction effort and has been described in one local petition as an eyesore slowly "rotting away."

Questions also surround Altus Property Group chief executive David Young, who has been declared bankrupt twice. Brewing company Castlemaine Perkins bankrupted him in 1991 over his pubs and nightclubs business, and he again declared personal bankruptcy in 2010 when his property ventures collapsed during the Global Financial Crisis.

The development has not yet secured formal approval from the Gold Coast City Council. And even if construction proceeds, the tower's claim to Australia's tallest may prove short-lived — Altus has separately announced plans for a 101-story, 393-metre tower in nearby Southport that would surpass the proposed Trump project in height.

The Trump Organization's existing property portfolio spans hotels in New York, Las Vegas, and Scotland, as well as developments across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Oman.
